Where to stay on the west coast

The west coast faces the Caribbean Sea, which is why the water is flat, clear and warm almost every day of the year. It's also where the island's grandest hotels sit, and where you'll pay the most to sleep. If your ideal day is swimming before breakfast and watching the sun drop into the sea with a drink in hand, this is your coast.
What the west coast is actually like
Running from Bridgetown north through Holetown and Speightstown, across the parishes of St James and St Peter. The sea here is protected by reef and rarely has surf — you can swim comfortably at almost any hour, and the water is at its glassiest before about eight in the morning. Sunsets happen over the water on this side of the island; the east coast faces sunrise.
It is quieter and more residential than the south. Restaurants skew smarter and pricier, the beaches are narrower, and there's less to walk to at night.
Who it suits
Couples, honeymooners, families with small children who want calm water, and anyone whose priority is swimming and relaxing rather than nightlife. If you want to walk out of your hotel into bars and restaurants, the south coast does that better.
Beaches worth knowing
Paynes Bay for turtles about a hundred yards offshore. Mullins for the beach-bar scene, with a free car park opposite that fills by mid-morning. Batts Rock for a quieter, more local day with picnic tables under the trees. Folkestone at Holetown is a marine park with a marked snorkel trail.
Every beach in Barbados is public, including the ones in front of the most exclusive hotels — owners hold title only to the high-water mark.
Getting around from here
Holetown is roughly an hour from the airport by road and the taxi fare reflects that — it's several times the fare to the south coast. Buses run the coast road frequently and cost a flat BBD 3.50. A hire car is genuinely useful on this side if you plan to explore inland or reach the east coast.
