Driving in Barbados
What actually matters once you have the keys — including the rule that changed in 2025.
You no longer need a visitor's permit
Barbados abolished the visitor's driving permit in October 2025. You can hire and drive on your own national licence, with a small daily levy collected through the rental instead.
Driving is on the left
As in the UK. Give way to the right at roundabouts, and expect narrow lanes with deep roadside gutters once you leave the main highways — take the first day gently.
Keys at arrivals
Pick up at Grantley Adams (BGI) and you're on the road in minutes. Book the pickup for your landing time, not your departure time — the desks work to the local clock.
Is a car worth it?
If you're staying put on the south or west coast, buses and taxis cover most of it. A car pays for itself the moment you want the east coast, Bathsheba, or a supermarket run.
Fuel and parking
Fuel is sold by the litre and is dearer than in the US. Stations are easy to find along the highways and much thinner on the ground on the rugged east coast, so fill up before you head over.
Getting around without one
Route taxis and ZR vans are a flat BBD 3.50. Regular taxis are not metered — agree the fare first; licensed ones carry a Z on the plate. Uber launched here in October 2025.
