Barbados on a budget

Barbados on a budget

Affordable Barbados hotels, guesthouses and apartments with live prices — plus where to stay and when to go to keep the cost down.

Barbados has a reputation as an expensive island, and at the top end it earns it. But there's a real supply of guesthouses, apartments and small hotels — mostly on the south coast — and the difference between a well-planned trip and a badly-timed one is larger than the difference between hotels.

Where to look

The south coast, from Hastings through Worthing to Oistins, has the densest supply of apartments and guesthouses, and it's the part of the island where you least need a car. Self-catering makes a real difference here, because eating out is the cost that surprises people.

When to go

June to November is the wet season and rates drop, sometimes sharply. The rain is mostly short convective showers rather than washouts, and the island is greener. Late April to early June is the value sweet spot — dry-season weather at shoulder prices.

Avoid Crop Over (early July to the first Monday in August) if you're optimising purely on price; it's the one time the wet season isn't cheap.

Where the savings actually are

Not usually the room. Eat at least some meals from the same places locals do — a fish cutter, a plate at Oistins on a Friday, roti — and you'll spend a fraction of restaurant prices on better food. Use the buses: a flat BBD 3.50 goes anywhere on the island. And skip the hire car unless you're actually exploring.

Frequently asked questions

Is Barbados expensive?
It's one of the pricier Caribbean islands, but the range is wide. Accommodation on the south coast, local food and the bus network all cost far less than the resort-and-restaurant version of the same trip.
What's the cheapest time to visit Barbados?
The wet season, June to November, excluding the Crop Over period around late July and early August. September and October are typically the quietest and cheapest, and also the wettest.
Do I need a hire car in Barbados?
Not if you're staying on the south coast. Buses and ZR vans run constantly at a flat BBD 3.50 fare, and Uber now operates on the island. Hire a car for a couple of days if you want to see the east coast and the interior.
